This painting is a special piece that commemorates the recent decimation of the Bighorn Sheep that were residing in the Elk Horn mountains by my home. The herd was planted in 1996 with 25 sheep. Since that time, their numbers grew to approximately 220.
Several years ago, someone illegally released a number of domestic sheep and goats into the public lands. Because the domestic sheep were not vaccinated, they gave the wild sheep pneumonia. Since January, 90% of the herd have already died and the rest are likely carriers, which will likely kill off any lambs born from this point on. |
